Quick Fix Tips and Solutions

1Colour or Monochrome Printer?

Deciding what sort of printer you will require is very confusing. Number of people use colour printers to print monochrome documents. Colour toners cost more to produce and more expensive than monochrome toners.

When printing black on colour cartridges, your printer uses a combination of black and colour cartridges to match the data your computer sends it.

A colour printer is consequently a poor choice if you are printing monochrome documents. Look for a low cost monochrome printer is a better alternative.

2Storing Toner Cartridges

Keeping a spare of toner cartridges is necessary. Be sure to store them correctly in order to avoid damages and ensure optimal performance. Here are few suggestions to assist users in handling and storing their toner cartridges.

  • Store at or below room temperature. ldeal temperatures is ~23oC (-75"F) with relative humidity of ~5O%.
  • Under controlled environment, the shelf life of unopened toner cartridge is approximately two years from the date of purchased.
  • The shelf life of opened toner cartridge is no more than six months. The performance of the toner will severely worsen if it sits around for too long.
  • Keep toner cartridges right side-up in a horizontal position. Do not store your cartridges vertically.
  • Avoid subjecting toner cartridges to direct sunlight, even for short period.
  • Avoid storing or keeping toner cartridges in places that are dusty or where dust may gather.
  • Do not store toner cartridges in your car or vehicle, not even the trunk, for long period.
  • Do not store toner cartridges anywhere corrosive gases may be present.
  • Toner cartridges can be affected by salty air. Try to keep your toner cartridges out of air that may have high saline concentrations.
3Proper Cartridge Handling Suggestions
  • Do not touch the surface or try to rotate the photosensitive drum in the cartridge. This can cause damage and toner spills.
  • Keep away toner cartridges from direct sunlight even for short period.
  • Always handle toner cartridges in horizontal position.
  • Place the toner cartridge in a flat surface when pulling the cartridge seal.
  • Regularly clean the toner cartridge by removing the dust, paper and toner residue around the cartridge to minimize potential printing problem before they arise.
4Page Yield

Page yield is the estimated number of pages you can print with one cartridge. lt is based upon the lnternational Standards Organization (lSO) test methodology for measuring cartridge yields by printing out pages with 5% page coverage until the cartridge runs empty.

The data is used for comparison purposes only and not to predict the exact yield you will get from the cartridge. lndividual cartridges can perform above and below this average due to variations in the cartridge manufacturing process. Variations such as operating temperature, humidity, page coverage, paper type, font size, colour or monochrome, duplex or single print, all affects the page yield of the cartridge.

5Font Size

Choice of font can make a huge difference to your toner use. Using serif fonts like Times New Roman, when compared to Calibri or Arial fonts, is pretty economical because of the thin letters. The smaller the surface area of the font, the less toner it requires to print. Size matters if you want to utilize your toner usage when printing text.

6Choosing the Right Paper
  • To avoid printing problems, check your printer handbook for the recommended paper for your printer.
  • ldeal storage temperatures is ~23oc (~75"F) with relative humidity of ~50%.
  • Moisture content on paper can affect the toner adhesion, paper jams and the fuser roller temperature.
  • Reusing paper that has been printed on one side is cost effective and benefits the environment. However, make sure that the paper is not damage and does not exhibit wear as this will cause paper jam, misfeed and damage to the printer and cartridge.
  • Thicker grade of paper may not be suitable for your printer. Check your printer handbook before use.
7First Toner Low Message

Do not change the cartridge if the first toner low message appears on the printer. Simply remove the cartridge and carefully shake it a few times, horizontally back and forth. This distributes the toner powder inside the cartridge and you can usually continue printing for a long time without any errors.
